Presidential Scholars Program
The Program
Established in 1981, the Presidential Scholars Program at The American University in Cairo provides recent university graduates with the opportunity to learn Arabic, work at an international university, and experience life in Cairo - the bustling, vibrant center of Middle Eastern culture.
Each scholar spends one academic year working in an administrative office and reports directly to a supervisor. The Presidential Scholars Program is designed to give young American scholars access to the Middle East; therefore, it is best suited to applicants who have not spent time in Egypt or at AUC before.
About the University
The American University in Cairo is the only University in Egypt that provides an American form of higher education. English is the language of instruction, and the curriculum emphasizes the liberal arts. Approximately 90 percent of AUC's 5,000 degree-seeking students is Egyptian, while the remainder comes from elsewhere in the Middle East, Africa, Asia, Europe, and North America. In addition to BA, BS, LLM, MS, MBA, and MPA programs, AUC has 30,000 students in adult education programs and 10,000 students benefiting from in-service training, primarily in management and engineering. It also operates various applied research centers, including the Social Research Center and the Desert Development Center.
In September 2008, AUC relocated to a state-of-the-art campus in New Cairo, a planned community about an hour east of AUC's Tahrir Square location. This new site provides AUC with three times more space for teaching, research, and recreation.
